This Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time is about being prepared, being ready for the Kingdom to come. We do not know when our own end will be; being ready means we need to be vigilant in our daily life—rich in what matters to God. Jesus tells us today: “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Are you blessed with talent and treasure? Are you sharing what you have and what you have to give?
Rich in what matters to God is about sharing yourself where needed, in works and acts of charity and service, not just throwing some money at a problem… Rich in what matters to God is getting your hands and hearts involved in some ministry of some sort. Rich in what matters to God is stepping out and stepping up—like our new altar servers. Are you an active member of this Community?
In the Second Reading, St. Paul teaches the Hebrews and us about what faith is: “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” This reading made me ponder how we all tend to live here on earth thinking and acting like this is IT, this is the destination for us, and yet in faith we know that this is not so. All of us are on a journey to our heavenly homeland—something in the day to day we tend to forget and then are not ready for the Kingdom. We are instructed to live in the joy of this journey back home to God—and to be vigilant—for we do not know when we will be called back home, arriving at our real and final destination. This is the point from last weekend and for this week about storing up treasure only for yourself; how you are known by what it is that you value. We are known and shaped by our choices—so what is your treasure to share? Food for thought.
Keep singing!
