In our diligence toward a safe environment for our children, youth, and vulnerable adults, ALL volunteers must complete:
- Virtus Training, commonly referred to as Protecting God’s Children.
- Fingerprinting is now required for all who serve in any capacity, with our youth, handicapped, elderly, or vulnerable adults.
- Volunteers who DO NOT work directly with children, handicapped, or vulnerable adults are required to submit a biennial background check.
PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN (Virtus) CERTIFICATION
- First Time Users register here (Instructions for registration)
- Please check your status by logging in to your Virtus account and verifying the last time you took the class or modules that are necessary to remain compliant.
- If you are unable to login do not create a new account. Instead, use the I NEED LOGIN HELP feature.
- VIRTUS will automatically send a notice of recertification fifteen days prior to the three-year anniversary of your most recent certification or recertification. This notice will be sent to the email address on file.
State of Michigan Background Checks
Volunteers, employees, and even tenants are often asked to submit a background check form. What does a State of Michigan “ICHAT” background check reveal? It is primarily used to show public criminal records for adults, including felony and misdemeanor convictions within the State of Michigan. It can include pending cases and sex offender registry status. For more than 99% of our volunteers, there are “no findings” when we run a background check.
The Archdiocese of Detroit, along with many other archdioceses and dioceses, has made this a requirement for everybody active in any ministry. At St. Aidan, only the Pastor and Safe Environment Coordinator are designated to run the ICHATs or view findings. Should a criminal history be revealed, the Pastor evaluates the finding and the ministry. In almost every case, the volunteer is permitted to remain active in ministry without any communication. In very rare instances, the Pastor sets some parameters for the volunteer to follow.
